Who We Are

The Sego Lily Center for the Abused Deaf (SLCAD) is a non-profit 501c3 agency that was officially established in September of 2001. The agency is run by a group of concerned people (Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Hearing). The Sego Lily Center for the Abused Deaf (SLCAD) is an advocacy agency culturally and linguistically designed to meet the specific needs of Deaf, Deaf/Blind and Hard of Hearing victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. SLCAD provides direct services to victims (finding safe shelter; legal advocacy, counseling, support groups, parenting classes, etc.), support to survivors, inservice trainings to professionals, education to the Deaf community and collaboration with service providers.

SLCAD is modeled after and trained by the Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services (ADWAS) and is supported by the federal Department of Justice Programs – including the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) and Victims of Crime Act (VOCA).

Our staff and volunteers receive specialized training (60 hours or more) to work as advocates for Deaf/HH victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. The trainings include information provided by our model agency in Seattle, WA, Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Service (ADWAS) www.adwas.org; Utah Domestic Violence Council www.udvc.org; Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault www.ucasa.org. They also attend many hours of on-going trainings and workshops.
